U.S. Passports Are REAL ID Compliant

Advantages of U.S. Passport vs. Real ID

REAL ID vs. U.S. Passport

Document Requirements For Air Travel

Beginning on January 22, 2018, domestic air passengers with driver’s licenses issued by a state that is not yet compliant with REAL ID and that has not received an extension will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel. Both the U.S. passport card and passport book are REAL ID compliant. If you already have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license, it will remain valid for domestic air travel.

Is REAL ID mandatory?

How do I decide if I need a REAL ID or A Passport?

If you have a valid U.S. passport or U.S. passport card, military ID, or other federally approved identification, you may use this it as your form of identification to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities after the new federal requirements begin October 1, 2020.

If you know you will not be boarding a domestic flight or visiting a secure federal facility or military base, you do not need a REAL ID driver license or ID card.

If you are planning to travel internationally, you will need a U.S. Passport. A REAL ID is not a replacement for your passport, when it comes to international travel.

Our fast, reliable, secure, and efficient services enable today’s
international travelers to depart on a very short notice to all
worldwide destinations.

The REAL ID Act

REAL ID Requirements

The REAL ID Act, which became law in 2005, requires driver’s licenses to meet minimum security standards for issuance and production. For air travel and certain other purposes, federal agencies are prohibited from accepting driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards unless those states have been granted extensions.

The U.S. passport book and the U.S. passport card are REAL ID compliant and are acceptable identification to board domestic flights. The U.S. passport card is the same size as a driver’s license and only costs $55 for first time applicants or $30 for those who have already had a passport. A U.S. passport book is always required for international air travel – passport cards are not valid for international air travel.

How a Passport Can Help you Fly Domestically

The U.S. Passport Book vs. Passport Card

The U.S. passport book and card are both accepted by TSA as ID for domestic flights. The Real ID Act requires all state-issued identification documents (IDs) to meet a set of minimum security standards. IDs that do not meet these minimum security standards won’t be accepted for federal purposes, including as ID for boarding domestic flights. Your state’s IDs might not meet these minimum security standards.

The passport card cannot be used for international air travel, although it is still a great ID to have in your wallet for domestic travel.

  • TSA accepts the passport card as ID for domestic flights.
  • The passport card can be used for entering the United States at land border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
  • The passport card has the same validity as the passport book: If you’re over 16, your passport card is valid for 10 years. If you’re under 16, your passport card is valid for 5 years.
